Preparing for Laser Skin Resurfacing

  1. Avoid the sun: Use a SPF 15 to 30 sun-block daily. Reapply as needed. Wear a hat that shades your face if you will be outdoors for a prolonged period.
  2. In the evening gently wash your face and neck with . Then apply ( a retinoic acid preparation). An amount the size of a pea is sufficient for the entire face. You may experience some redness and skin irritation from this. This is normal and subsides in several days to two weeks. But if it is severe or bothersome call us. We will change you to a more gentle preparation.
  3. In the mornings again wash with your facial cleanser. Then apply (Alpha hydroxy acid Preparation). Follow this with your sun blocker for the day. If you receive a kit of products such as Nu Celle for laser resurfacing patients, follow the separate instructions for those products.
  4. Some patients will also apply ( a skin bleaching preparation) in the mornings before your sun-block and again in the evening.
  5. You might also receive Botox injections prior to your resurfacing procedure. This will help to improve the results on certain dynamic wrinkles and skin folds. Refer to the separate information and instructions about Botox.
  6. Fill your prescriptions well before your scheduled resurfacing date and bring them with you to your appointment. Instructions will be provided for each medication.
  7. Begin taking the medication to prevent cold sore eruptions (Herpes simplex) two days before your procedure ( Valtrex or Famvir). These are taken also on the day of your resurfacing then continued for a total of 10 days.
  8. You will have an antibiotic to reduce the risk of bacterial infection. You will begin this on the day of the procedure. Take (Cipro or Zithromax) times per day for days following your resurfacing.
  9. Plan to have a full week of "down time" following your laser resurfacing. Arrange to be free of work and social obligations. Arrange to have assistance so that you will be as comfortable as possible.
  10. You will need to have a driver to bring you home after your laser resurfacing. Be sure to follow any separate anesthesia instructions before your procedure.
  11. You should have nothing to eat or drink after midnight on the night before your procedure. Sips of water with medications are okay.
